Just like butterfly wings

Thursday 3 September 2020

Media including social media is a very powerful tool that can play a role in revolutions and wars, teach you how to make bread, start up a small business, keep people loved and connected, spreads misinformation like wildfire and so much more. But most importantly any material can be used as evidence in court.⁣

If you’ve had the time and interest to read any of my lengthy posts, you know now how generally I don’t believe there are free media. ⁣
Especially coming from those who tend to polish like literally “all good here folks, look elsewhere, we’re perfect our side is immaculate”. ⁣

Many use media as a reference when it’s supporting their narrative, and would throw the opposing side under the bus when they use the same media! contradicting? cherry-picking? absolutely, I’ve seen this over and over (war, revolution, social and health issues you name it).⁣
•••⁣
It’s human nature in some to vilify a group to show up as heroes and heroines. Are they right? are these ways fair? So they label people corner them and tell others how terribly (insert adj) depending on the narrative they are. That’s how the ground is gained to follow on, that’s how people are manipulated in many situations (wars are good examples, all the religious cults in the world as well).⁣

Are we being true to ourselves though? in front of god us normal loving to live people that have nothing to gain? do we sleep well or do some things we aren’t specifically affected by make us turn at night? do we all have a living conscience you know that compass we are born with? that we either grow or kill by time?

I remember my father would tell me the classic answer of why our world looks like it does, “it has been like this since Habeel was killed by his brother and that’s why we have heaven and hellfire” good and bad will always exist. I also remember seeing my mother upset watching the famine in Somalia early 90’s when I asked why?

⁣What’s the price of our silence? Where do we draw a line?
Are we still there standing on that same rug I’ve seen for a long time, looking at the problems swept under? As long as I’m untouched I shall not care

I’ve always wondered do we really look into our selves being fair? decent? unbiased? fair-minded.⁣ I know we’re very different and our lives are lived differently.!
⁣But would we stand up and say, I think that’s wrong? even to the people or cause, we’re fighting for and the message we lead by?⁣

This has been one of the most important questions I realised years ago, I’ve often questioned myself with. You know the one god talked about times in his book. Told us to stand firm against injustice even if it were to be against our own blood?⁣

This characteristic gives you labels 🏷 you’re not “loyal” for instance. But are we seeing this in our world? Do we stand with it often?⁣

⁣•••
People would use every single straw left to say “I’m right” not often we’d see someone say “I might be wrong” “this is not the end” “I need to report someone in my family” “we need further research” well the latter is very often in the science field the one (that doesn’t kill people or let them die on purpose) the side that I stand by.

Who is to blame for the injustice that happens to the fragile little children in this world? ⁣more fragile than butterfly wings, any damage can potentially last a long time, longer than we would live to see.

What happened to (it takes a village to raise a child).

This one conversation between Allah and angles high above, always made me ask my parents why are we here then?

The angles questioned god why are you creating a new being that will corrupt and (shed blood) kill?

•••
A couple of days ago many of us may have seen a terrible video circulating some videos had the little child’s face blurred in others it wasn’t. The perpetrators three men were shown to sexually abuse a 13 yr old child. The Arab media was blown with this story.

The usual reaction went on, I was disgusted, cried, I prayed the child is well, I tried looking into how was he doing? were those criminals arrested? one was told to be (politically immune), I was thinking of the mother that was mentioned many times.

I talked to myself, why were his first cries ignored? or never taken seriously? weren’t there signs? emotional and physical.
•••
Mind you priests, sheikhs, and the (honoured and trusted men) and women have done this before, just last year a nursery worker near Edinburgh was caught in this same act (I couldn’t sleep for nights).

Some were prosecuted others were flown out to another continent, especially those who use faith as their cover.
•••
I was asking myself who is to blame for what happened to this child? as reported (yes by the same media I’m often questioning) he was working with them in a shop. But there was a video that went viral? a grown man was assaulting a child! then were more.

Were there no channels to protect him?
There must’ve been signs? does he go to school? what school he’s working to provide for his family, he’s a refugee, his father left them and lives in another country! family members? neighbours? anything? Why has no one protected him? as reported on media this has been going on for years.

Who is to blame? is it just the perpetrators? or the circumstances and people that led the child to be a worker at a very young age?

Are we still building our lives over hidden problems that we swept long ago under the rug? Are we willfully ignorant?

Uncertainty

Thursday 23 April 2020

I hope everybody is keeping safe in these times of uncertainty. Back to social media feels like when you're entering a room packed with people and you just came to say hi and have no idea who to give a hug or shake hands first. If its anything that lured me back is the beauty of the connections and all the similarities with the most genuine people I've met through this space throughout the years.

With all the changes we've seen around us lately, I think introverts like myself are probably doing the best, as long as we're allowed to get some fresh air I'm grateful.  The twist here is when you get an extroverted four year old that likes to talk even in her sleep.

It's been a good time to check our privileges and blessings to be able to have a deep breath is now and today one of them allhamduleh

Probably the most I'm busy with these days is keeping up with Joud and her questions of why even the park across us has been closed? (people gather no matter what sometimes). One of my favourite questions of hers was how do viruses talk to each other? do they communicate mummy?
I'm enjoying both Joud and Adam's presence all day, we've pretty much adapted with all the changes. The sleep-wake cycle in our home is the same as before for my sanity and everyone's happiness!

I'm finding it a good time for more Arabic introduced at home as there's not much else we're doing and no one we're seeing, it’s the best opportunity to catch up with Arabic.  I'll share anything I might find useful I know many parents are in the same boat as us. I tuck them to bed and get on with things I've been simmering for long months now, something that keeps my hands and head busy and oh very happy!

I've noticed lately since the lockdown the amount of pressure arsing from this pandemic on social media. Its the overshare of all activities, learning, and peer pressure if you may.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for using the time we're given in a good way. But there's a massive wave of the pressure for learning languages, baking bread, teaching quantum physics to your tot, doing 90 squats a day, and yet the worst (the no sugar no carb no this and that fad diets) spreading like  wildfire, not that we were ever short of.

Its good that many are finding the opportunity and ability to do all of that (except for dieting I never support that), it really is. But it is not so good when it starts to pressure other people or affecting their mental health in this very unusual time. And like I expected the unusual extreme activities will plummet soon (I’ve seen they have now)..

People are losing their jobs, homes, yet worst people are losing loved ones and are not able to even touch them, people are living in isolation, the most vulnerable in our societies are at their weakest now.  Do you really think "it was never time it was always you" a good time to have this conversation?.

Imagine all that affecting people in Tripoli as well, a year-old war has been the most damaging in the previous month, take care of yourself please and don't believe everything you see on social media. And don’t get me started with the “positive and negative” labelling god it does my head in.

It's okay if you like to read every day but it's also okay if you don't feel it, it's okay if you've been defrosting your toast loaf for weeks and not able to find the energy to bake it yourself.  You don't lack discipline (like that horrible message circulating has been telling you).

Remember this please next time you feel you're a failure for not using your free time wisely, you're not on vacation we are living through a pandemic it's not the best of times for growth, remember the history we read once about ? well, we're living it now.

We're facing uncertainty with everything in our lives now, it's heavy it's a steep ride, it will get better, it always does, doesn't it? just don't add unnecessary pressure to something you can control, please. We can only control certain things these days so please look after the inside of you first.

Self-chosen isolation the thing all introverts do well is a good time to just know yourself, express your feelings, calm down, do whatever you like on your time under your conditions! so welcome aboard extroverted folks I promise you'll find good pleasure and you never know what kind of inspiration spurts through this time.
Remember Isaac Newton made his greatest discovery of gravity in isolation (hence the apple photos ahem).

Praying with all hope to see you all safe on the other side.

Seashells and ivory towers
Climate Justice

It sounds like a funny title let me explain. I've been reading much about environmental justice for the past months, climate justice as part of it was something that was very interesting to read about.  I decided to share this hoping it will benefit anyone with environmental interests.

The other day we went to the beach and while we were enjoying the beautiful weather. I set my eyes on the sand and what was just under my feet. Since young, I always saw that seashells somehow are similar to people, how different we all are yet equal, but that was my young self speaking for a moment.

Climate justice
So what does climate mean? and what are climate change and climate justice?
The climate is in simple words the average weather of a region for more than 30 years. Whereas weather is the short term conditions in a given region and climate change means the change of the weather of that region.

Climate change can lead to extreme weather events such as flooding, wildfire, and droughts. This threatens food supplies, and livelihoods. It also increases the risks of poverty, hunger, and conflict in nations.  Where the greatest impact may disproportionately affect disadvantaged populations in our world. Our lives as humans and all living beings are impacted by this change.

Climate change has been going on for millions of years. However, there is overwhelming scientific evidence that it is mostly man-made and caused majorly by something called greenhouse gasses GHG that are a product of fossil fuel burning and mass scale deforestation. While the earth has been through many climate changes in the Earth's past periods for example (Eocene and Triassic) mainly due to volcanoes, surprisingly it's not comparable to the speed climate is changing now.

Main man-made greenhouse gas emissions
Combustion of fossil fuels (coal, fuel, and natural gasses formed from the remains of dead plants and animals), deforestation, and intensive livestock farming. Along with other natural processes like plant and animal respiration, make up the GHG.
Here's the issue GHG trap heat radiating from Earth to space. This heat, in the form of infrared radiation, gets absorbed and emitted by these gases in the planet's atmosphere warming the lower atmosphere and the surface.
Limited progress in terms of combating climate change will be made if we just try to be conscious consumers, or try living our lives sustainably. Not even our proud selves dragging back our recycle bins from outside and putting all those food scraps for compost (thinking we’ve done well, its all fixed!).

Don’t get me wrong all this helps (I do it too), it will help the circular economy where (nothing is really wasted rather looped) and also help decrease greenhouse gasses. by not dumping all our waste into landfills haphazardly.  But it will never fix the initial problem. As this might seem like a critical post, it's really just a view from another side. Looking at those in the ivory towers.

We're not equal in this world where sapiens rule, our colour, shape, beliefs, and background define our worth by many opinions that are inherited and entangled in our societies. Wherever you are in this world and how much your beautiful melanocytes produce melanin. Discrimination is entangled in our world, it's part of our history as humans and unfortunately even present.

The environmental justice movement began in the eighties when people came to notice that power plants, large industrial polluting factories, and waste disposal areas were located near to minority and low-income communities.

The movement’s concept worked on a fair distribution of all environmental burdens among all people regardless of any aspects.  So in many places in the world, a person's socioeconomic status can be the major contributor to disproportionate exposure to effects of environmental justice including climate justice.

While illegal facilities in developing countries seem to be the highlight of the media*, having mountains of non-recyclable plastic waste from (first world countries) dumped either for the hope of processing them recreating yet other plastic products for consumption or just buried leaching some very harmful substances in the environment that can have serious effects.

There are more concrete deeply rooted issues that need to be addressed and fixed. Or else it will continue on, developing countries will be the ones paying the greater price of what the first world countries contribute to damaging our environment.

I say “our” as this world and environment with all the ecosystems involved are for all of us. It's us to live in, enjoy, and thrive in. Yet how come scientific studies and socio-economic studies have been screaming from the top of their lungs for years warning of the global dangers to come.

The lack or insufficiency of infrastructure, advanced technologies, and governmental institutions can possibly be why developing countries will be left to deal with climate change beyond their abilities and adaptation. They are the least prepared for the changes as many of us are aware of their social problems, conflicts, politics, and needless endless wars that many developing countries are going through to this day.

Governments of leading developed nations need to make a change they need to change policies. While I am completely aware of the difficulties of making any meaningful practical changes in developing countries. I can only feel deeply what they go through on a daily basis.

Imagine me telling my friend that is now heavily pregnant with her second child to reduce her use of electricity when she only gets less than 5 hours of power per day in the scorching weather in Libya, whilst inhaling the gases produced from burning piles of rubbish people have left thrown in areas it should never bee is seen in!!

So what can we do to help?
If affordable and possible please do think of making these changes, it will cut down your own emissions. I am completely aware many things cannot be done in developing countries like Libya cycling is dangerous more than anything thanks to the lack of infrastructure.

- Green your commute(ride a bike or public transport)as much as possible and fly less when you can.
- Using energy more efficiently (heating and lights control for example).
- Using solar power banks.
- Using the most efficient bulbs LED’S
- Get charged up with renewables
- Insulate your home
- Wash clothes in cold or warm (not hot) water.
- Don’t waste food.
- Grow your own.
- Eat local food
- Eat less meat.
- Buy local.
- Consume less and waste less in general

What can governments do on a larger scale that would lead to a better resolution?
Renewables are whats praised in the scientific world using (natural sustainable resources) including wind, tidal, and solar can be used in generating electricity, heat, and fuel for daily uses and transport, switching to less demand in fossil fuel usage.

The power for change is ultimately in the hands of policymakers.
This report gives attention to both, identifying areas where GGR policy requires urgent development.

" The 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) special report shows the impacts of 1.5 °C global warming (above pre-industrial levels) and sets out a series of related global emissions pathways to help
strengthen our response to the threat of climate change. It estimates significant differences in the impact of warming at 1.5 °C compared to 2 °C – the difference between a world with some coral reefs and Arctic summer sea ice to one without. The report shows that countries must be more ambitious in their climate efforts across all aspects of society"The 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) special report

"A net-zero GHG target for 2050 would respond to the latest climate science and fully meet the UK's obligations under the Paris Agreement."
Net Zero The UK's contribution to stopping global warming. Committee on Climate Change in May 2019.

“The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Living Planet Report (LPR) 2018 demonstrates that unsustainable human activity is pushing the planet’s natural systems that support life on Earth to the limit. It shows that wildlife populations have decreased by 60% in just over 40 years”. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

I sometimes fear what will the future hold for my children and yours as well. What will we tell them about all the destruction we made? what will I say?
I want to tell them at the least I tried.

Is this my calling?

Paths and thoughts
So since I've grown to know myself throughout the years I've always known I'm always at a restless phase, it can be good yet comes with some downfalls. Always pacing ready to make a change as drastic or simple I always need to leap never caring at times if the ground will ever hold me or for how long.
And if you've been along with me in this journey of life you probably have noticed. I'm not the same every year, besides from emotions that are not as paced to change. I fall in love with new things and can deeply fall out too.

I remember sharing some of my thoughts on Instagram about how I somehow feel a change in waters and can never settle. The turning point came last November, my husband had an accident and was hurt badly. Following those undeniable feelings, I had to move on, my bag is always ready on my back

Doors and roles?
Closing a door just makes you look at the other one's wide open waiting for you. Eltwakel is what takes you out of any doubts اعقلها وتوكل. That same time in November, I was going through a lot of pressure, our daily lives were been suddenly altered, that all lasted for months and until this day our lives remain changed. One day my husband was opening the door walking through the next he was unable to.  Many unwell thoughts and hidden worries came rushing back.

One night I sat by myself long enough and made many changes. One of was making a choice to close all business in Libya and close both my businesses on Etsy sunzdid and Palmartly for the time being, I was unable to deal with anything other than my family and own state of mind, so I gave myself a good long holiday, taking care of those who matter most.

The question of what's my role in life? has been forever in the back of my mind. It was certainly not just designing and illustrating for clients (nothing wrong with that if that's your passion and profession) nor it was working extremely hard to make a palm leaf project turned business.

Bigger and louder
There was something forever screaming inside of me, that little voice just got bigger, louder, and bolder, like a pulsing vein never to be calmed. I have always kept it away as a secret being a scientist until last December. I don't know maybe it was because Instagram was not the place for science, maybe I thought the connections and friendships I've made there will get eventually bored of me talking about protecting a wild animal or why do this rather than that because that is untrue, etc.

At that time of transition, one day I just started posting science-based stories on Instagram with no preparation beforehand (I'm sure I bored many). And I just could never stop, I had so many positive comments all were full of appreciation and encouragement alhamdulillah.

Nature walks are the most loved activity we all enjoy equally, lessons and memories are built equally

Since that day I have been making lists of endless things to share, drawing, researching, and writing. I'm unable to work now in this stage of my life not as a Zoologist nor as a Biotechnologist. My family remains my priority, my physical and mental health equally in hopes I'm making a good balance.

But I might as well share many things and make science accessible for everyone from the comfort of my home whilst my littles are playing around in front of me. Now, this is what I do every day I read, write and draw so much. Make memories with the people I love most, growing and learning each day with them. Maybe it will open an undiscovered door?

An illustration from Old city in Tripoli, Adam just naturally joined in

Critical thinking and scepticism
See we are all different and analyze things differently, scientific analysis in many everyday encounters is not usual to many. That's why many people end up in trouble due to their lack of judgment in that particular matter. And I don't blame them as much as I blame the people that know that untrue information spreading in this age and its accessibility by social media and understanding the potential harms of it.

Why not share your knowledge with others?  why is it not common to use critical thinking? why don't people ask enough questions? why are they not skeptical? why those that hold the answers like to hold them forever? why not make science accessible to everyone? I don't mean it on a molecular level, just simplify things to be understood by the mainstream well based on scientific evidence and not based on opinion or experience.
All other fields of focus are well lit in our societies. I then figured out all the answers to my own questions, my own curiosity opened a door.

Why did I learn in the first place? why don't I use the platform I have and make an influence and (no you don't have to have hundreds of thousands following you to make an influence nor you have to be inspiring in just particular matters in life), you can have one ear listening to you and you can have a positive change on someone's life.

I still remember how I felt when people told me how they were using less plastic bags and one telling me how she now uses her families old gouffa.  Once a very kind previous client of mine told me "thank you for putting yourself out there, you're very brave, we're learning".

I felt so incredibly happy, we're all learning together, just some folks are naturally more vocal! then I realised I'm doing something here, all the words, photos, and questions I share are noticed.

So maybe it is my call to share some knowledge that impacts daily lives and choices. Tell them all about what I 've been told, what I've read, researched, and even worked in? share my experiences and thoughts? share that piece of me wholeheartedly hoping for nothing but public benefit and something to give light when I'm six foot deep down.

Just be one thing, can you?
Many adviced me to get one thing in focus, either my business or focus on life in general!
So I was told to focus on being a mother and artist! but am I just that?
I started life as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a friend, a scientist that turned her all-time hobby and passion into a business.
Should you just box people? am I not subject to growth, development, and change? do I have to be always what you seemed to judge me by? since day one? the answer is NO and none of us are nor should allow any to do that to us.

So not to confuse you but I'm all of the above.

Enough sunshine for all
Maybe it's clearer now that I walk my own path and never compete with anyone but my self.
Just a thought to share is that not everyone you cross paths with in life is competing with you, I promise you grass is greener on your side. I was raised to know there is enough sunshine for all.

You have a purpose in life you're not just a number or an untold story, you are a story with light and darkness fierce and ferocious. Look for it, sit with yourself, be hard but gentle, ask yourself all the questions, answer them. Fix the fixable, cut the dead ends, and walk through. There's much more inside of you.

So, have you found your calling?
